The hammer museum

A content hub and digital archive

With 20 exhibitions and 300 events a year, the Hammer Museum needed an intuitive and elegant visitor interface powered by a robust content management system. During the design phase, Surface Streets worked with the Hammer to establish a distinguished visual style, uncover user motivations and identify publishing needs. The initial architecture supports past, present and upcoming exhibitions, searchable online collections, a sophisticated programming section, and easily discoverable information about the organization. As a second phase, we added an Expanded Digital Archive that allows the Hammer to publish artwork, essays, and ephemera from past exhibitions that would have otherwise been inaccessible.

Outcome

Surface Streets worked with The Hammer to identify publishing needs and explored designs options that would allow for ongoing updates to the site. Through the website, Hammer is able to manage content that includes robust programming, past, present, and future exhibitions, and social and editorial content.
